Re: François Van der Elst - RIP
I came across this earlier which sadly makes it more tragic because it seemed that he had a problem but then an operation to sort the issue out... So sad.

“Francois had an operation because he was suffering from heart rhythm disorders” his brother Leo Van der Elst told the press “After treatment, he felt well and returned home. For the New Year, we are going to drink a small glass of champagne at my mother’s. Back at home, Francois suffered a heart attack, in the presence of his wife. The emergency services were called, but it took them thirty minutes for him to be resuscitated. It’s way too much."

A sad fact is before he suffered what turned out to be a fatal heart attack, he had planned to come over for the Palace game with the Belgian Irons Supporters Club of which he was a member. Poignant article in the Official site and a great photo of Francois with West Ham fans on a previous visit.

RIP to a great Hammer.

I was at the Heysel for the ECWC final, both he and Rensenbrink tore us to shreds. I was over the moon when we signed him, albeit about five or six years later.

Very sad news. I remember seeing François play during his time with us and he was so clever and a joy to watch. Great player with fantastic skills. Always wondered why he never stayed longer with us.
RIP.

Very sad. Just after he joined West Ham I saw him, David Cross and Pat Holland in a pub in Shenfield, Eagle and Child I think. Those were the days.

Such a shame, was hoping he would pull through. Always remember watching the 76 ECWC Final on a little telly in the kitchen and seeing this little fella destroy us and was then mighty pleased he joined us a few years later. RIP.

Very sad. Great little player. In '83 we had him, Goddard and Swindlehurst up front; what we'd give for a front line of that ilk now, eh? Maybe not Sandy Clark though. RIP
